## Dynamic Flow Profiling
#### Overview

Increasingly stringent standards for trace levels of contaminants such as chromium, arsenic, nitrates, and TCP, in combination with a surge in demand for groundwater resources, have led to a need for more efficient and precise well characterization.
Under exclusive license to BESST, Inc. from the U.S. Geological Survey, the Dye Tracer system uses an NSF 60 certified rhodamine dye solution injected at varying depths within a well while the well is still operating at a steady state. The return rate of the injected dye provides high-definition data that is analyzed by BESST to determine flow dynamics throughout the well. Other conventional methods of characterizing wells are expensive, involve disrupting water service, and do not accurately represent water quality with flow velocity data during steady-state pumping conditions. BESST’s miniaturized technology allows the well to operate normally while the diagnostic analysis is conducted, which provides representative data under actual pumping conditions with no test pump required.
#### Objectives

- To delineate zonal flow percentage contributions along the screened sections of a well.
- To develop a customized sampling plan for water quality analysis.
- To determine mass transfer of contaminants throughout a well.
- To reduce or eliminate dependence on expensive treatment technologies.
- To delineate plume migration within an active well field.

Combining BESST’s HydroBooster Pump System with the Dynamic Flow Profile has produced diagnostic data that has revealed opportunities for many different well modifications. Installation of sleeves and packers at precise depths along well screens can prevent contaminants from entering wells, resulting in water treatment cost savings that have been estimated at nearly 80 percent annually. Engineered suctions and pump replacements to address energy use and sand invasion are other common modifications that can be implemented following a Dynamic Flow Profile.

## Ambient Flow Profiling

#### Overview

Offline wells present their own challenges to successful wellfield management, but can also serve as valuable tools when gathering data for subsurface characterization. In order to measure the ambient flow and chemistry within offline wells, BESST has developed its Ambient Flow Profiling Service to better characterize flow and mass flux under non-pumping conditions. 
The Ambient Flow Profiling Service utilizes the [dye tracer system](https://besstinc.nyc3.digitaloceanspaces.com/905b9ccbe4fb05b9d16c04f883410b15.pdf) developed by the U.S. Geological Survey that injects small quantities of diluted rhodamine dye solution into the well. The dye then moves with the hydraulic gradient within the well, and that movement is measured using one or more fiber-optic sensors positioned a known distance from the injection point. 
The diagnostic data obtained with the Ambient Flow Profiling Service provides insight into potential risks to the water quality of critical assets through the process of vertical and lateral mass transfer within an aquifer.

Combining BESST’s HydroBooster sampling system with the Ambient Flow Profile Service has produced diagnostic data that has revealed opportunities for a variety of different well modifications, including sleeves and packers at precise depths to reduce water treatment costs.

## Long-Screened Test Well Profiling

#### Introduction

BESST Inc. has integrated the practice of test well investigations with the precision and granularity of BESST’s proprietary dynamic flow tracer and chemistry profiling to confidently inform development of production wells. A dynamic, steady state flow and chemistry profile is employed in a long-screened test well with a custom injection and sampling plan to best characterize the subsurface environment in tandem with lithologic and geophysical data. The data gathered and analyzed from the long-screened test well aids in determining the most viable and effective construction for a proposed production well; including recommendations for screen and blank casing locations, pump depths, and pumping rates to develop a long lasting well.
 
#### Methods

The long-screened test well application begins with determining the right location for drilling or testing an existing well in the immediate area of a proposed production well. For example, an existing monitoring well with a long screen, usually exceeding 300 feet in continuous length, may take the place of drilling and developing a long-screened test well. Once the informed construction is underway, or the existing well is modified to testing standards, a team of scientists gathers the geologic data in the region and of the well to best advise the testing methods. The long-screened test well sampling typically delineates 15 zones along the length of the screen, but this may be adjusted based on the client’s needs. In most instances, an electric submersible pump is deployed to the bottom of the well to engage the entirety of the well screen. Once the well has been sufficiently pumped and developed, the [Dynamic Flow Profile](/redirect/DynamicProfiling)  is conducted in a span typically lasting two full days. The flow data is used to mass balance the chemical influence of each zone within the well and at the wellhead, producing a flow and chemistry scenario that will be used in forming recommendations for the development of a production well based on the clients desired water yield and chemical allowances.
During the long-screen test well profile, a pump and packer assembly may be used in isolating portions of screen to maximize engagement to smaller zones along the screened interval. This process has been used to ensure screen engagement and compare pump placement locations to the overall chemical yield of the well. 

#### Results
 
The long-screened test well technology is proprietary and innovative in the groundwater community and has already provided clients with deep understandings and unprecedented foresight into their future well designs. Furthermore, this technology has been integrated into entire basin characterizations for a variety of basin planned use projects. The data gathered during this test has been used in conjunction with groundwater modeling to accurately identify constituent mass and water production potential in the subsurface.
